Open Letter to the Media and Politicians

I can't believe I of all people am saying this, but people in the media and Capitol Hill?

Can you please stop talking about Jack Bauer as if he's a real person and the stuff he does is remotely real?

Like, I know in my write-ups, I talk about the character's actions and motivations as though he's real person, but that's because I'm evaluating the validity and plausibility of his actions in the context of selling the story. I'm always aware that this is a fictional character, which, I'm not sure you are. Because you talk about torture and invoke his name in articles that have nothing to do with entertainment and everything to do with real situations.

May I remind you that in the world of 24, a) they've gone through 7 presidents in 14 years; b) there have been multiple attacks in LA including a nuclear bomb going off; c) Jack Bauer has died twice; d) no one eats, sleeps, or goes to the bathroom; and e) most unbelievable of all, there is no traffic in LA or DC? It's fiction and the whole point of the show is the same as any show: to entertain. Jack Bauer is James Bond meets Die Hard.

He.Isn't.Real.

And bringing him into a conversation where we are talking about REAL travesties and the real crisis we have over how to administer justice and defend ourselves without becoming the very thing we are fighting doesn't help your argument. It's insulting and it cheapens the real problems that real people are struggling with.

You might want to focus more on THAT instead bringing in a fictional character and evaluating his methods next time, just sayin'.

Sincerely,
The Management.

In other news, Hamlet is not a good role model for young princes.

I do get annoyed when people (mostly parent’s groups) think that TV violence causes real-life violence. Isn’t it the other way around?

Icon love! Oh man I have to make one that says that for Jack or Renee. Since clearly all my icons have to be Jack and/or Renee;)

Hamlet is an eloquent jackass. Teaching that play gave me a headache:)

Love YOUR icon

How do you make a video icon? Can you upload a flash animation or do you have to link to another site?

Well that one's just an animated gif, and the instructions come helpfully in photoshop. Not that even THAT enabled me to do it myself. I still coudn't time it right and in order to prevent striking everyone with epilepsy, had to send it to Kay to slow it down (thanks Kay!). If I have time later tonight I'm going to try another one, so we'll see how that works out.

Thanks. An 24 icon that causes siezures is oddly appropraite.

Video icons/gifs can be made in Photoshop. Open a video in photoshop and it automatically opens the animation window. Then resize and crop to 100x100 and "Save as for Web Devices," adjust color settings so that it's below 40k, and you're all set.

Enabler! :-P

I must try that sometime.

Word to all of this. And my guess is there few few people in this world who wish more fervently than I do that Jack Bauer WERE a real person;)

[identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
See, you wish he was real, but you recognize that he isn't. Even if you do flail like Kermit does in this icon.

These people do not seem to get it at all.

[identity profile] leigh57.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I probably look a lot LIKE Kermit in this icon during shippy moments. I don't even wanna know;) But yes, like you I'm quite aware of the difference between fiction and reality.

Hey question, because I just noticed that I said "few few" instead of "are few" in my reply above. I was going to edit it, but the option is gone. Is there a time limit on comment editing with a paid account? Not that it's a big deal -- just good to know.

[identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't edit once someone has replied.

Well that's fascist! Pft.

[identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe. Well more it's more so that people can't edit comments to make it look like someone is replying to something they're not. It's in place because trolling happens all the time. You forget that not everyone on LJ is as awesome as we are.

Oh you're so right. I hadn't even thought of that. The entire troll thing is so outside my frame of reference that when I hang here I forget it exists. This is also because a lot of my stuff is not only flocked, but subflocked (am I totally making up words?) to an even tinier list. So maybe I'm the one who's fascist, huh? Eh, I just love the awesomeness of you guys:)

Filtered. The word you're looking for is filtered using the Custom Friend Groups.

Filtered! Like the water from my fridge. Excellent. But "subflocked" sounds ever so much more fun! Sigh. I was infamous for making up words in grad school. Totally. Even during my oral comps. I'm special:)

[identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes but are you your own *brand* of special? Do you have your own cereal? Jewelry endorsements? heheheh.
ext_407935: (Frak Me)

[identity profile] leigh57.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
No no no. Just generic special. No cereal or jewelry endorsements;) We can't all be as special as you are. Besides, who wants to buy Shana anything? It sounds so...weird.

Uh, warning. I caught a bunch of spoilers this morning. My brain is burning. Expect a whole new level of flail after tonight's ep. I still maintain that I am not made of tough enough stuff (how's that for rhyming?) to be a fan.

But it's all TOO FUCKING LATE.

Shit.

[identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Stop taunting me with spoilers!

Hehe, just kidding. Thanks for the fair warning that you're gonna flail. I like to be prepared that way.

Dude, I so agree that it's not even funny. Fiction =/= real life. For instance, people sending hate mail to Carlos Bernard need to STOP. And yes, stop bringing up 24 with every ticking time bomb scenario because it's a *TV SHOW* a tv show where it turns out that a giant conspiracy has its tentacles in government and yes, it's fiction.

This is like using X-Files to support your theory about aliens existing. Also, 24 as a show calls it torture, doesn't call it enhanced interrogation. But yes, Jack is NOT REAL stop using him as an example to prove points.

[identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hate mail to Carlos? Really? People need to grow up.
