This is a Fringe post.

So did I mention that I am totally loving Fringe right now? It's interesting, freaky yet beautifully shot and I don't mind that it's a slow burn because it's totally in the vein of the X-Files in that you have mythology arc eps as well as monster of the week eps. I know at times it seems like it's ripping off the X-Files every other week, but that doesn't really bother me because the X-Files ripped off a lot of things in folklore, literature and staples in the horror genre for its MotW eps too. Besides which, the myth arcs are totally different, and the core relationships in this show are the warped parent-child relationships Walter has with Peter and Olivia.

I also appreciate that:

1) Olivia wears sensible shoes and awesome, work appropriate clothes, make-up and hairstyles.

2) The show gives a lot of time to developing non-romantic relationships; fully realized friendships, family, and work relationships abound in this show.

3) Fringe is like the reverse of Lost in that the audience has the answers to a lot of the BIG secrets and is waiting for the characters to catch up. None of this waiting for "answers will be revealed" crap. It's more like, "watch how the characters freak out when the ticking time bomb goes off and the shit hit the fan." It's a refreshing change from the twists of the week competition that seems to be infecting a lot of shows. (There are, of course, still some questions, but it's nice to be ahead of the characters once in a while.)

So in conclusion: Fringe. If you like getting quietly freaked out, you should watch it. Jump in this week for the repeat of the episode, "August." It's a great episode, and it has one of my favorite lines ever.

Also, I wound up making a fanvid for Olivia. Originally it was supposed to be a "recontextualizing S7 Renee in light of S8" vid, but the song works better for Fringe and Olivia, so now it's a "trippy dreaming Olivia" vid instead. I'm writing this as I watch Lost. What does THAT tell you?

Yes to Olivia and her sensible shoes and short nails. Anna Torv is my official girl crush.

I wanna see more of the alt-verse. Fringe is one of the few shows that can use the image of the WTC in a respectful, non-sensationalist manner.

You already have my comments on your fanvid, so I'll just say great job. What kind of software do you use for editing?

That your good taste in TV is wide and varied? Or maybe you're a JJ Abrams fangirl? Hehehe. ;)

Mmmm. Yeah. I wanna know more about the alt-verse, but equally compelling is the shit that's gonna hit the fan when everyone finds out about Peter. Especially Peter's reaction. April can't get here fast enough.

Thanks. Final Cut Pro.

HOW MUCH did I love what he did with Star trek?

Sadly, Lost is boring me this season. At least that's a show that knows when to end.

Heeeeeeeeeeell yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. (See, now everytime someone mentioned Star Trek, I automatically think of the "On a Boat" parody.) Also, unrelated point: whenever I see your icon, I think of this macro:

At least there is that. It will be interesting to go back and watch it from the beginning to see how much opinion changes when you mainline it and there's not enough time to theorize.

Bwahaha. I just like pretty photos of other planet. I like to be reminded that this isn't the only world this is. This has been a Golden Age of space exploration with all the probes, but we are too wrapped up in our own issues to appreciate it.

There was a very funny "Interview" with good by Vanity Fair a few years back, where God talks to the interviewer:

God: I love all my children equally. But aesthetically I'm going with Asians.

God: Mars1 I don't like to talk about Mars. Next question?

Too true. Although, you saw my last post, right? Also, correct me if I am wrong, but I heard the Star Trek BluRay has a BD Live feature that allows you to see live NASA feed of space.

I don't have a Blu Ray player. Yet.

Back to TV: Another show I'm liking is Caprica. It's another slow burn. Very slow. But we get to spend more time in the BSG universe.

[identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, have not gotten around to starting Caprica yet, but I understand that it's a prequel to BSG? If that's true, then I imagine watching it is sort of akin to watching the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Smallville or Merlin. Half the fun is trying to predict how they get from point A to point B.

I usually hate prequels (see: Star Wars) But for Caprica I made an exception. The shows has it's issues which I won't get into here, but it is a fascinating look at a world very similar to, but not identical, to out own. Imagine our society if Mars and Venus were habitable, inhabited planets we could be friends with or have conflicts with.

BTW. I'm snagging #2. I needs me some Astrid. Will credit. Thanks.

I watched the first episode and then got distracted. The same thing happened with Alias, and I loved it when I came back to it. Also, I love Joshua Jackson. His Canadian Road Trip movie One Week was pretty good.

I might have to catch up on Fringe over the summer, if I'm anywhere near done Buffy and Angel by then.

I find that if you go into S1 already knowing the BIG SPOILER about Peter, it actually makes you appreciate the slow burn a lot better. I'll admit, Fringe started a lot slower for me at first, but S2 is really getting quite good. I'm totally digging it.
