If my heart was a compass, you'd be north
Okay so this is mostly directed to the MADeIra girls who did theater in high school, but OMG you guys. Remember when we'd do Rain in the choir room right before a performance to get centered and focused and stuff? This Slovenian choir basically did the same thing, before launching into an acapella version of Toto's Africa: their version of Rain is AWESOME.
I miss technical theater in Madeira. I miss building sets, goofing off late at night and on weekends, pizza with the slight hint of sawdust, paint fights, wrenches named George, glow tape, platforms held together with gaffe tape and C-clamps because we ran out of screws, walking in the catwalks, dangling precariously on the cherry picker, watching the sunset over the Potomac from Chapel, and Brown Paper Bag Day. I don't miss high school all that much, but I do miss Madeira theater a LOT.
In other news, anyone else kinda annoyed at LJ for changing the blue bar? It took me way too long to figure out that to get to my friends page I click on the Friends tab. I liked the drop down menus better.
Also, I should mention that I'm currently in Hong Kong en route to Vietnam. After rolling in last night around 1:30am and falling asleep around 3am-ish, I got woken up at 8am by Enzo asking if we could watch High School Musical together. He's back in that phase again. (At least he's no longer refusing to respond to anyone who doesn't call him Troy Bolton at school). Anyway, he's turning 4 on the 31st, and he keeps asking for a HSM cake. Maycee's asking if I can photoshop his head onto Troy Bolton's body, so I guess that'll be part of my gift for him. LOL. Oh the things I do for family.
On the subject of little kids, they are making a Ramona movie that I truly hope they don't screw up because I loved those books as a kid. On the plus side, the trailer looks pretty good and the adult cast seems pretty strong (SANDRA OH!). On the other hand, trailers lie. And I don't hate Selena Gomez; in fact I think that she's probably one of the stronger Disney actor working right now, but I'm not sure if I see her as Beezus. Also, the newcomer playing Ramona has some pretty big shoes to fill since Sarah Polley's Ramona is near and dear to my heart. I'm probably gonna bring Jaz to see this either way though. I just hope that this particular Walden Media adaptation is more in the vein of Bridge to Terebithia than The Seeker (UGH). It could go either way, really.
And to end this trip down memory lane, here's your Random clip of Awesomeness for the Day:

That Rain is amazing -- the thunder was awesome!
OMG, Baby Sarah Polley! How cute is that? Did you see her movie Away From Her? I'm sure Gorden Pinsent practically directs himself, but she did such a great job directing, and they all respected her so much. It was a very moving film with nice pacing. Not too over the top.
I know what you mean about adaptations. We watched The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe tonight, and I thought they did a really good job. That whole series is so wrong in many ways, but I love it still, because it meant so much to me as a kid.
Have so much fun in Hong Kong!

I *did* see Away from Her and thought it was pretty good. Sarah owns a corner of my heart for being in Road to Avonlea, but her Ramona was also good. I just remember the blue hands and arms and thinking- Yup. That's how I pictured Ramona. Joey King has a lot to live up to.
Yeah, the first one was great. The second one keeps up with the spirit of it, but it deviates a LOT from the source material. I also think that as cute as Ben Barnes is, they should have saved him for Dawn Treader and kept Caspian as younger. I'm excited for Dawn Treader though. I like that book the best (it has dragons, mermaids, and happens on a ship, so one can see why it hits so many of my buttons), and I hope they don't screw it up.

Aw, it's so awesome that you're nostalgic for HS theater. I'm nostalgic for absolutely nothing about high school, so that makes me slightly envious and yet super glad for you that it was such a blast.
Yay being on the way to Vietnam! I'm so excited for you:)
Reading all of your stuff about movie adaptations just made me tired, and then I realized that in some ways I'm never going to lose my old schoolness. Do they HAVE to make a movie of everything? I guess the answer it yes, but it kinda pisses me off. There are so few movies that ever measure up to the books. See how old I sound? lol.

Well, I still am a HUGE advocate of reading books because it forces you to use your imagination more and once you see a film adaptation of it, it forever colors how you picture it (whether you accept that interpretation or not). That said, we're increasingly becoming a visual culture, and we can do so many more things now than we could before that I can't blame people for wanting to see what they can do to bring their own visions to life. It's probably why we're seeing so many sci-fi/fantasy/comic book adaptations. It's like a new toy that no one can put down. You want to use it for EVERYTHING, you know?
So basically, I think there are merits to both. However, I think that one should always read the book first. :)
