Those are two excellent points about Fringe. It's serious without taking itself seriously, because it can poke fun at itself and have these great light moments, and it DEFINITELY is banking on the fans' knowledge of other shows. That's part of the cleverness, of the way it takes what you expect and turns it on its head.
I have NOT checked out the comics. Well worth the time, is it?
