I knew about John Boyd as the systems analyst and Jennifer Westfeldt as the reporter, but I thought the Freddie Prinze thing was a joke until it showed up on Hollywood Reporter: Freddie Prinze Jr as Davis Cole. Fred from Scooby Doo as the ex-Marine who joins CTNew as the newest Jack Bauer acolyte? REEEEEEAAALLY?

Also, according to some reports, we've got Cherry Jones telling TV guide that the gap between S7 and S8 is 18 months. Have yet to find a link for that though. (Source).

I guess the whole 6 weeks thing is gone, since it would take longer than that to reconstitute CTU.

Also, it's a little bit jarring to jump around Twitter and see stuff from your LJ as other people's backgrounds. So J.J., whoever you are, glad you're enjoying the motivators and wallpapers? You should say hi. I don't bite...at least not any more. (This isn't one of you guys on my flist, right? Cuz I'm a little lost here.)

*blinks* Okay somehow I missed that one.

Well, beats Garofalo.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

Well, what I find interesting is that he's going to be the head of CTU field ops, so I guess that means that neither Jack nor Renee is going to be working for CTNew.

Only Chloe will be there, I assume butting heads with John Boyd's character and feeling somewhat inferior because she's been out of the game for a while? I think I remember them saying that's the direction they are going with for Chloe- that with the tight budget and new tech, she kind of is in this position where she has to prove herself.

Isn't it considered bad form to take someone's wallpaper? I HAVE taken one of your icons *points* but I did ask nicely. Or did I?

The time frame is necessary if TPTB want to treat Jack's health in a semi-realistic fashion. He needs times to for the stem cells to kick in and be back up to full strength.

I am VERY glad that Cherry Jones/ President Taylor will be back.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

Oh ,it's extremely bad form.

Part of me is really sad to see the wallpaper all chopped up like that, and another is irked that no one asked and I don't get the credit.

But then there's the one that really can't get worked up about it because *shrugs* that's the nature of the Internet. You put an image out there, be prepared for people to riff on it.

So, I can't say that I'm not bothered by it, because I like to think I'm a pretty laid back person when it comes to that stuff. All I ask is that I get a heads up if you're using it, because I like to know how it's being used. But it's not like there's anything I can do to stop someone from using it.

Short of not making icons and wallpapers anymore, of course.

From: [identity profile] marinw.livejournal.com

I suppose it can be wierdly flatteringf? I think that is how I would feel if someone plagerized my fic.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

I should be mad about it, but right now I'm in a super great mood because the parental units are coming home. So weirdly flattering is what I'm going with for now.

Things like this though do make me want to stop making icons and wallpapers and stuff. Won't lie.

From: [personal profile] catch22girl

I think at some point I started liking him but I can't remember. He can't be worse than Eric Balfour. Or Rena Sofer.

No, really, the time frame keeps changing, although Kiefer could just be wrong.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

No one can be worse than Rena Sofer, but Raaaaaaachel. I've seen his work. If he's as bad here as he was in Wing Commander I'm gonna cry.
catch22girl: (our hero)

From: [personal profile] catch22girl

Well, that was ten years ago. Okay, confession, I actually liked him in Summer Catch and Head Over Heels.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

I only bring up Wing Commander because that's the only role I can think of where he was supposed to be an action-oriented authority figure of some sort.

Cole is the head of CTU Field Ops. That means he's going to be serving the Curtis/Doyle/Renee role for S8. Freddie Prinze can do comedy and even romcom, I'll give him that. But ex-Marine? It's a definite stretch and I certainly hope he's improved and gotten more edge in 10 years. It's not just the more serious role; it's more the action I'm worried about not being believable.

I'm willing to give him a chance, because lord knows that the roles Annie played prior to 24 were all soft and girly and she turned out to be Action Figure Barbie like HARD CORE this year. Still, she was a relative unknown, and Freddie Prinze is going to have more work ahead of him to get people to stop seeing him as Fred from Scooby Doo or that guy from She's All That.

catch22girl: (a common problem)

From: [personal profile] catch22girl

Yeah, I see what you mean.

Well, ever since I heard about his dad and all, I've had more sympathy for the guy. I think he could play drama, he just really hasn't been given a chance.

He hasn't done really anything in a few years.

True, and we saw that clip of her in that other Real Time Productions show that never went anywhere and were all uh...

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

Well again, it's the action that's going to be the bigger hurdle for me than the drama. Roger Cross is a BIG guy. Kiefer isn't big, but you know he's all wiry muscle and he's super intense. Carlos has a height advantage and he got solid muscle underneath. Ricky was coming off NYPD Blue, so he had that going for him.

Unless FPJ has gotten a lot more buff since I've seen him, like James McAvoy going from Mr Tumnus to Wanted kind of buff, his build is working against him. Annie had the same intial problem, simply being a woman, but she had enough dance training to know how to her body really well, so the speed at which she moved sold the action.

On top of that, one thing that Kiefer, Carlos and Annie all do really well is to harden their looks whenever they're in the field. It's in the eyes; they're sort of piercing and intense without being robotic, even if the action is only about to take place. They're always "on" so to speak. Again, going with Annie as an example because it's the most apparent, there's a WORLD of difference between Renee and Annie. Annie's eyes are light where Renee's are almost always heavy with whatever emotions she's feeling.

FPJ's not only got a baby face but his eyebrows and especially the way he widens his eyes, sometimes make him come across as a wet-behind-the-ears rookie. Which is the opposite of an ex-Marine.

So *shrugs* I dunno.

True, and we saw that clip of her in that other Real Time Productions show that never went anywhere and were all uh...

Yeah. For those who haven't seen it btw, here you go. (http://www.anniewersching.net/2009/05/21/annie-wersching-in-company-man/)

I find your default icon mesmerizing.

Okay, Carlos' height advantage I find funny as he and Kiefer are almost the same height. FPJ is 6'1".

I don't know, it'll be easier when we see promo pictures.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

Yeah I had fun with that. It was orignally just supposed to be a LOLcat Macro, but then I realized it would make a kickass icon. Heehe.

FPJ is tall, but for some reason, I classify his build as slim and lean. The shoulders play a lot into it. Taking the example of Kiefer and Carlos, even though they are almost the same height, Carlos has these broad shoulders that make him seem bigger and taller. It makes his musculature very different from Kiefer whose smaller frame makes his muscle seem more compact. He makes up for it by being super intense and by appearing to move faster.

But agreed. The promo pictures will definitely help. I need to see FPJ in kevlar to really assess and compare.

Until then, at least we know he can hackey sack?

Gah! People stealing stuff pisses my shit RIGHT OFF. But also, I'm in a really crappy mood this morning, so *headdesk* to the long timeframe. Suck. Yeah yeah Jack needs to heal, but good lord how am I supposed to fanwank wtf he and Renee are doing during that time period? As if I weren't creatively stalled enough. . . fuck 52 swans, which are bigger than ducks.

Heh. Could I BE more whiny?

Also Freddie Prinze Jr.? No really show. I laughed out loud when I read that. Still, totally true that he can't be worse than Rena Sofer. Almost nothing is worse than Rena Sofer.

From: [identity profile] marinw.livejournal.com

Or James Cronwell, a good actor who was tragically miscast in a role that we all wanted Donald Sutherland for. I tried squinting but that didn't work.

The casting of 24 is usually so good that bad casting is grating.

I did like Jeanne G. I am probably alone in this.

ETA: Day 6 in general had some very, very bad casting. Ricky Schroader? *shudders*

Ricky Shroeder? *snerk*

I adored Janeane Garofalo this season. However, it bugged the shit out of me when everyone kept trying to say she was Chloe 2.0. Just because they both work with computers? Psh.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

However, it bugged the shit out of me when everyone kept trying to say she was Chloe 2.0. Just because they both work with computers?

Because the cast and crew refered to her as the FBI's Chloe in interviews.

I guess it was the easiest way to describe her quickly in interviews, but in reality, the characters couldn't be further from each other. Where Janis is weak (technical computer skills / IQ), Chloe is very strong and where Chloe is weak (social graces / EQ), Janis is very strong. Mirrors, as was one of the many themes in S7.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

I'm willing to hold off judgment until I get more descriptions of the character. Because Freddie Prinze is kind of a one note actor, but if Davis Cole is that one note, then hey it works, right? *clings to futile hope*

They better not waste precious Jack and Renee and Chloe time on the romance arc Davis seems to have though. That ish better be GOOD, otherwise, I'm going to be pissed.

And I liked what Janeane Garofalo did with Janis, because I think she gave the character layers and quirks that the writers did not. The blame for any failure of the character lies solely with the writers in this case, I think. They didn't do nearly enough with the Janis character except to use her as a Greek Chorus. It's a thankless job, but at least when Tony and Michelle did it in S4, they had their relationship to deal with as well.

catch22girl: (nerd vs. nerd)

From: [personal profile] catch22girl

No, no, I loved her too!! Although I've been a fan of hers for *years*, so to have her join my favorite show? Yeah. Awesome. I wish she had more to do.

UGH. Season six had some insanely bad casting. Doyle, the guy who started out a sadist and then was everyone's BFF.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

Yeah, S7 was remarkably GOOD with the casting in all the ways S6 wasn't. Freddie Prinze worries me a little.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

I think I was more sad to see the LJ wallpaper chopped up, because you lose the Goodnight and Go lyrics. *sob*

Heheh, seriously though, I care, but not enough to get worked up about it. It just would have been nice to know, as that would have been the polite thing to do. I recognize that not everyone is as awesome as the people on my flist, but one should at least attempt to observe the niceties of civil society, no?

From: [identity profile] cybertoothtiger.livejournal.com

I've never seen anything with Freddie Prinze in it, so I have no opinion on that. But wow, that clip of Annie in Company Man -- she looked like Bree from DH. Too bad it didn't get picked up, but on the other hand, yay, because if it had she wouldn't have played Renee.

Ricky Schroeder wasn't terrible casting, IMO. I could believe him as the mysterious Denver sadist. It was the writer's lack of direction and the love story with Nadia that made me squick. No, really, ladies. He hurts you because he doesn't know how to say he loves you. Abuse=love, don't you know that? Ugh. I once played darts with Ricky Schroeder when he was staying at the hotel I was working at when I was 19. He was a nice guy.

I can't believe someone would take your wallpaper! I mean, I can, but ew.

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

Haha, you should see some of her GH stuff. It's kind of hilarious actually.

Oy. The less said about the whatever it was they did with Nadia the better.

Eh, I should be more mad about it, but for some reason, I'm more sad to see it all chopped up. Sticking the motivator up there in the corner ruins the flow of it too, but that's just the graphic artist in me talking.

From: [identity profile] superstarxf.livejournal.com

I'm not excited about FPJ....I just hope that Jack&Renee have been together in this 18th months!!!!
thanks for the spoiler ;)

From: [identity profile] dealan311.livejournal.com

Nah, they won't be. And I'm cool with that because that means that the likelihood of them getting a happy in S8 becomes exponentially bigger.
