So, yeah this is mostly a fandom based journal, but I also believe in a) supporting my friends and b) supporting good causes and both of these fall into those categories. So, if you all feel so inclined to help out two of my friends, even just a little, please consider giving:

Promoting Literacy in the Philippines.
My project, Aklatang Pambata, is a community library project that aims to target the high illiteracy rate among early graders in our site(s). Under this project, two specific programs will be launched: 1) A Reading (Storytelling) Program and the 2) Catch Them Early (CTE) Program. These programs will be implemented by volunteers from the community or partner organizations and will serve as interventions to address the literacy problems in public elementary school children.

Objective: For the Reading (Storytelling) Program, I hope that at the end of the project, the children will have developed good reading habits (which include developing reading strategies such as noting important details, critical thinking/asking questions, etc), will have increased knowledge and skills through supplemental lessons on a wide variety of subjects (science and health, numeracy, literacy, civics and culture, creative arts, environment awareness, etc.), and will have learned to recognize themes that show them positive values. For the Catch Them Early Program, I hope that the children develop and/or enhance their phonemic awareness, learn word identification strategies, improve their oral reading fluency, and ability to read independently.

End Product: For the Reading (Storytelling) Program, I expect the students to compose their own stories and present them through a storytelling performance/play. Each session shall also have enrichment and enhancement activities which will gauge the students comprehension and appreciation of the stories read. For the Catch Them Early Program, I expect the students to progress from non-readers to readers (able to read with comprehension, write/compose brief essays/journal entries)

30 Hour Famine.
Did you know that by the end of today, 26,000 children under age 5 will die - most of them from preventable causes like hunger, poverty, and disease. 14,000 will die from causes related to hunger - one child every seven seconds.

This weekend, I am participating as a youth group chaperone in an event called the 30 Hour Famine sponsored by World Vision. For 30 hours, I will choose to go without food and drink. In order to keep busy, our group will also take part in service projects around the community throughout the day. Please consider supporting me in this cause by making a donation. Checks can be made payable to World Vision and all gifts are tax-deductible.
