So they've begun casting for S8 and I have a bit of a concern about the descriptions of the new characters.
So in the the list of S8 characters, the CTU members are as follows:
Anyone else concerned that they're purposely trying to draw in younger audiences by casting 20 somethings?
I understand that we always need a CTU/FBI type base for tactical. But I'm a little concerned that Jack's new support team, at least on paper, seems to be coming across as CTU: the New Class. You can see it- Mini-Jack, Mini-Michelle, Mini-S1!Milo, Mini-Bill.
The fact that Chloe will be the Screech to the newbies kinda makes me sad. I know part of her storyline will be her transitioning from being a stay-at-home mom and having to compete with new technology, presumably butting heads with the hipster Glass. Which, okay that works I guess. But I dunno why they think I'd care about seeing a romance between Davis Cole and Dayna Pakkala. It's like they're positioning the show to continue without Jack, which sorry, NO.
And let me just say that if Cole and Danya are anything like Milo and Nadia, I'm going to be pissed for them wasting time on that when we could be watching the Jack and Renee show. We've spent the last season falling in love with Renee and her relationship with Jack. I don't care if they are together romantically or not; this season has shown that it WORKS when they are on the camera together.
The rest of it sounds like standard 24 fare. We have yet to have clues about who the villain is, which is fine, because it seems to be going back to the S1 era of protecting one man vs stopping bombs/virus/bioweapons. So far we've got:
The Political Storyline: The Middle Eastern President (Anil Kapoor) is in talks for a peace treaty that Taylor is spearheading. His brother, the Secretary of State, is reluctant to do so because he is distrustful of them, which is bound to cause waves with Rob Weiss (Chris Diamantopoulos) who is kind of unapologetically single-minded in protecting Taylor's interests.
The Hashemi Family: Although he and his wife have a strong bond, President Hashemi is/was cheating on his wife with a reporter, Meredith Reed (Jennifer Westfeldt). His daughter (Nazneen Contractor) is very traditional and sides with her mom a lot, but gets really defensive when people attack her father.
So, I'm not totally worried about the season. But again, the reason I am tuning in next season is to find out what happened to Taylor, Chloe, Jack and Renee. And CTNew had best bring it because I can't help but think that it's going to be a retread of S4 and S6, where they gave us all these new guys, but we only got interested when our fan favorites came back.
Prove me wrong, 24 writers. Please.
ETA- And now we have Hastings aka Bubba Gump AND our first villain Doug Hutchinson aka X-Files' Eugene Tooms as Davros, a dangerous European terrorist. So *crosses fingers* maybe they aren't going to skew too young.
So in the the list of S8 characters, the CTU members are as follows:
Dayna Pakkala, any ethnicity, 20s. Dayna is an intelligent and yet down-to-earth data analyst at the Counter Terrorism Agency. She is great at her position and is respected by her colleagues at the agency. Dayna is romantically seeing her fellow agent Davis Cole, who recently returned from serving in the military. This woman has a personal history that she keeps hidden from the people she knows. SERIES REGULAR.Jonah SchwartzArlo Glass, any ethnicity, 20s. Jonah is a quirky and brilliant Systems Analyst at the government's Counter Terrorism Unit. He looks more like a college grad student rather than a top secret undercover agent. He is somehow hip and geeky at the same time. Jonah is an expert at computer technology. SERIES REGULAR
Davis Cole, any ethnicity, Mid 20s - 30s. Davis is a former military guy who is now in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit's Field Operations. He has recently returned from time in the Marines in the Middle East, and he is now readjusting to civilian life. Davis aspires to eventually take a similar career path as Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). He looks up to Bauer and admires him. Davis is also romantically seeing his colleague Dayna Pakkala. SERIES REGULAR
Brian Hastings, any ethnicity, 30s - 40s. Brian is a clean-cut and businesslike man who is in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit's New York City office. He has a very keen and focused sense of intelligence about him. He chooses his words very carefully when he speaks and never overeacts to anything. He seems like someone who would be comfortable trading stocks or running a company, but instead he has chosen to help contribute to running the agency. SERIES REGULAR
